In the bowels of the densest and most suffocating city, a building with corroded walls stood like a scar on the urban landscape. It had no name, neither on the maps nor in the mouths of those who saw it. Nobody wanted to know what was happening behind its dusty windows. In the doorway, an illegible sign wavered in the stale wind, its edges covered in rust and grease. The only thing that survived was the echo of a number: 141. It was a number devoid of meaning, but it resonated with the insistent monotony of something that no one should investigate.
The entrance creaked open, revealing a corridor so narrow it seemed designed to obliterate the air. Every step of the tenants echoed like a lament trapped between the walls. The smell was a mixture of stagnant humidity and something indefinable, like an attempt at decomposition that could never be completed.
“Have you gone up those stairs again?” asked a hollow, barely human voice behind a half-open door.
It was Ludvik, the only one with a visible face among the occupants. But that face seemed more like a map of scars and tensions. He was a man whom the years had worn down beyond recognition. Her hair, reduced to scattered strands, fell over a pair of opaque eyes that seemed not to see, but took in too much.
“There is no other way to get there,” Neva replied, holding a box that seemed heavier than her thin body could bear.
“You should stop those things. There is no place to store anything else here.” Ludvik moved away from the door, revealing an interior even darker than the hallway. His room was cluttered with obsolete appliances, pieces of blackened metal, and irreparably stained papers. It seemed like a museum dedicated to the irreparable.
“What I keep is not for me,” Neva replied, placing the box on a wobbly table that protested with a creak.
Ludvik said nothing. He simply watched as she unpacked. The box contained trivial objects: a brush, a jug, and something wrapped in a dirty cloth. When Neva untied the knot, Ludvik backed away. From the fabric emerged a frameless mirror, so worn that it barely reflected more than an opaque shadow.
“You shouldn't bring things like that here,” he said finally, his tone laden with a kind of warning that wasn't out of fear, but out of certainty.
Neva ignored him. He looked in the mirror, although what he saw was not his face, but something intermittent and wrong, as if the reflection came from another place, or from another time.
“I told you so,” Ludvik murmured as his breathing became heavy. “That mirror…does not protect those who look at it.”
Neva closed her eyes. Her reflection persisted in the glass, moving even when she no longer did. It was a slow movement, almost imperceptible, but enough to freeze the air in the room.
The first scream came from upstairs. Then another, lower one, as if suffocated by an immense weight. Ludvik, trembling, slammed the door shut. Outside, the echo of accelerated footsteps on the stairs seemed to have no owner.
The air in the hallway was beginning to thicken, as if the building itself was folding in on itself. Ludvik, his face hardened, regarded Neva with the tension of a man who knew too much and had remained silent for too long. But Neva, absorbed in the mirror, seemed to have crossed an invisible threshold. Her breathing was irregular, as if what she saw was pressing on her from within, not from without.
“You shouldn't have brought that here,” Ludvik finally said, his voice barely a murmur, laden with an anguish that was impossible to fake. His gaze was not fixed on the mirror, but on something beyond it, as if he feared that what it contained was not confined to its surface.
"Because?" Neva asked, in a tone that was neither challenge nor curiosity. It was a cold, surgical question, like someone looking for a specific answer to corroborate what they already know.
“Because things that do not return what is given to them… end up asking for more.” Ludvik took a step forward, as if each word was physically wearing him down. “That reflection is not yours. And when something stops being yours, it stops being just your problem.”
Neva moved the mirror away, but not enough to cover it. There was a slight tremor in his hands, but his face remained expressionless, save for the slight twitch at the corner of his lips. “Did you see it, then?”
“No,” Ludvik responded with unusual speed. Then he lowered his tone. "And I'm not going to see it."
Before Neva could respond, the creak of the stairs echoed like a warning. They both remained motionless. The sound of footsteps was slow, deliberate, and descended from the upper floors. The intensity of each step seemed to upset the balance of the building, as if the intruder's movement was challenging the very structure.
“Who else lives here?” Neva asked quietly.
“No one who should come down,” Ludvik replied, barely moving his lips. His hand gripped the edge of the table, not as a refuge, but as an anchor point. “Don't open the door.”
The order was clear, but Neva's face remained expressionless. His eyes strayed to the mirror. Although she wasn't holding it directly in front of her, a portion of the reflection captured the hallway behind them. There, in the dark background of the glass, a figure seemed to stop, motionless.
“It's there,” Neva whispered.

“What does the mirror see?” Ludvik asked, although he already knew the answer. His voice trembled, filled with a fear he had never shown before.

That's when the mirror reacted. Its surface vibrated, distorting the image, and an unbearable heat began to emanate from it, filling the room with a metallic aroma that burned the lungs. The vibration stopped, but the reflection no longer showed the empty hallway. It showed something dark, shapeless, that had no place or face, but was somehow more real than everything around them.
Ludvik, unable to contain himself, turned towards the door. But before he could stop, the wood began to give way, as if something on the other side was absorbing it, bending it inward with macabre slowness. What remained of the door was not a threshold, but an edge into a space that should not exist.
The door frame, which now seemed like an open wound in the geometry of the room, let out a sound that was both a whisper and a scream. Ludvik backed away, his movements clumsy, as if the air had become heavy and hostile. Neva did not move. His gaze was still fixed on the mirror, but his eyes were not looking at the glass, but rather at something beyond its surface, something that now seemed to be getting closer.
“Neva,” Ludvik said, his voice breaking. He tried to sound authoritative, but his words were just a faint echo against the intensity of the moment. “Leave that. Now."
She didn't answer. The heat emanating from the mirror was beginning to warp the metal edge, bubbling as if it were melting, but his hands remained firm. There was something in the tension in her posture that Ludvik had not seen before: a blind determination that he did not recognize in her.
“If you don't let him…” Ludvik began, but was cut off when the sound on the other side of the door changed. “What reason?” she replied, in a tone that seemed more tired than defiant. He turned the mirror slightly, and the figure in his reflection, which had remained motionless, now seemed to move forward, although the room was still empty to the naked eye. “All we do, Ludvik, is condemn things. “We close them, we seal them, and then we pretend they’re not there.”
“You can't save this,” he said, and for the first time his voice had a hint of pleading. “It's not something you can understand, much less control.”
“Maybe not,” Neva admitted, although there was a note in her words that belied the apparent acceptance. “But if we don’t do it, who will?”

It was a shock, an intrusion into both of their minds that left them breathless, as if every thought they had had up until that moment had been dismantled and reconfigured in an instant. Ludvik fell to his knees, while Neva barely managed to stay on her feet, the mirror shaking in her hands.
“This is not… for us,” Ludvik said, between gasps. “This was never for us.”
Neva did not respond. Slowly, he took a step towards the frame. Each movement seemed to tear the air, as if space itself resisted its advance. But he didn't stop.
When he finally crossed the threshold, the figure in the mirror disappeared, and the glass exploded into a thousand fragments that floated for a moment in the air before falling to the ground like ashes. Ludvik did not move. His eyes, open but empty, did not look at the door, nor at the remains of the mirror. They were looking at something beyond all that.
